What Is a Legal Engineer? The In-House Version of the Job

Josh Bertini

A legal engineer turns legal judgment into repeatable workflows, tools, and systems. In law firms and legal AI vendors, “legal engineer” can often be a formal title. Inside a legal department, the same work is often done by a lawyer, legal ops lead, or legal technology manager alongside the rest of the job.

Nicole Altman, Associate General Counsel at Instacart, built a legal-engineering tool called Contract Compass. It takes a contract, riders, and amendments, works out which terms superseded which, and returns a change log with the operative version.

Altman had no engineering background. She learned to vibe code at a Bolt hackathon to build it: describe the software you want in plain language and let AI help write it.

She described the build onCZ and Friends, GC AI CEO Cecilia Ziniti’s weekly podcast with legal leaders, technologists, and operators shaping how modern companies work and scale. Her colleagueKelly Noguchi, Senior Legal Technology and Operations Manager at Instacart, put it this way:

“Nicole’s a great example of a person that’s baked AI into their life, and it makes her a better teammate, a better attorney, and now a vibe coder.”

Legal engineering begins when repeated legal judgment becomes a system another person can run.

GC AI is the enterprise legal AI platformCecilia Ziniti, a three-time general counsel, built for in-house teams. More than 2,200 legal teams, including 300+ public companies, use GC AI across 53 countries.

Three kinds of features support this type of in-house legal engineering:

Skill Library: save reusable instructions and share repeatable legal workflows with the team.

Playbooks: turn preferred positions and fallback terms into consistent, repeatable contract review.

Automations: schedule recurring legal tasks to run automatically with the relevant documents and context.

In practice, legal engineering combines legal knowledge, process design, and technical fluency to turn recurring legal work into intake rules, contract playbooks, reusable review workflows, scheduled automations, and internal tools. The American Bar Association’sLaw Technology Todayholds that lawyers focus on delivering legal advice, while legal engineers focus on how that advice is delivered.

In alaw department, that line moves. The person who writes the intake rules is the senior counsel who used to answer each request by hand, and the person who encodes the fallback positions is the lawyer who negotiated them.

Legal engineering in-house is a set of skills a working lawyer or legal ops lead adds to the job they already have.

The same title can describe three different roles across legal departments, law firms, and legal AI vendors.

SettingWho holds the roleWhat they buildWho they serve
Legal departmentA lawyer or legal ops lead with a full caseload, or a dedicated legal technology manager on a larger teamIntake and triage rules, contract playbooks, reusable skills, scheduled automations, and the legal spec engineering implementsThe company’s business teams and the legal team itself
Law firmInnovation, knowledge, or practice technology teams, including former associatesDocument automation, client-facing tools, and configured platforms for a practice groupThe firm’s lawyers and their clients
Legal AI vendorCustomer-facing lawyers, titled forward-deployed legal engineer or solutions attorney depending on the vendorPrompts, workflows, and playbooks on the customer’s own documents, plus onboarding and trainingThe vendor’s customers and prospects

The title now appears across all three settings. What changes is the customer: the company’s business teams, a law firm’s lawyers and clients, or a legal AI vendor’s customers.

At GC AI, customer-facing lawyers who teachGC AI Classescarry the title Solutions Attorney. GC AI Classes are free, practical legal-AI training taught by experienced GC AI Solutions Attorneys and Advisors, with California CLE-eligible courses; more than 8,000 lawyers have taken them.

Here, the focus is on legal engineering inside an in-house legal department.

Three titles overlap here, and on a small team one person can hold all three.

Legal operationsruns the function: budget, vendors, matter and spend visibility, reporting, and technology decisions.CLOC, the Corporate Legal Operations Consortium, describes legal ops professionals as the chief operating officers of the legal team and maps the discipline in its Core 12 framework.

Legal engineering builds inside those processes: the routing rule, the playbook, the Skill, the automation. Legal ops decides intake should be self-serve, and the legal engineer builds theintake process, the triage logic, and the first-pass review that runs behind it.

A legal product manager, a phraseDoug Leedsused to describe the role, is an in-house lawyer who spots the legal risk and builds the fix into the product itself, the way a product manager would. Product counsel do this when they turn legal positions into a spec engineering can implement, whichAI for product counselcovers in depth.

The work draws on five core skills:

Legal judgment: Know the work you are encoding. A first-pass review rule for a contract type you have never negotiated is likely to encode the wrong positions.

Workflow decomposition: Write a task down so a teammate can run it the same way you would, including the rules that never bend. That structure is the anatomy of a GC AI Skill, andhow to build Skills in GC AIwalks through a complete example.

Testing: Run the build on completed matters where you know the right answer, compare the output, and fix the step that drifted.

Supervision and rollout:Comment 8 to ABA Model Rule 1.1requires lawyers to keep abreast of the benefits and risks of relevant technology.ABA Formal Opinion 512also emphasizes competence, confidentiality, and supervision when lawyers use generative AI. The lawyer remains responsible for reviewing work before relying on it.

Technical fluency: Useful, optional, and learnable by asking.Kaniah Konkoly-Thege, Chief Legal Officer at Quantinuum, became conversant in quantum computing and cybersecurity with no technical degree: “I just asked a ton of questions. And what I found was everybody was happy to answer them.” In-house legal engineering rewards the same instinct. You can write Skills, Playbooks, and Automations in plain English; deeper integrations can useGC AI’s API.

Published salary estimates vary because legal engineer can describe very different jobs. Compare compensation only across postings with similar responsibilities and settings rather than relying on one blended average.

Current law-firm postings show that legal-engineering compensation can be substantial. Latham & Watkins lists $220,000–$250,000 for aLegal Engineering Attorney. That is a law-firm role, not an in-house legal department benchmark.

Inside legal departments, the work often sits under counsel, legal ops, legal technology, or innovation titles. A dedicated legal engineer role becomes more useful when building, testing, and maintaining workflows is itself a full workload.

Coding is not required for the in-house legal engineering work described here. Start with a repeated legal task you already understand well.

Pick a high-volume repeated task:NDA review, vendor-terms checks, marketing approvals, or the question sales asks every week.

Write the workflow down: objective, inputs, questions, steps, output format, and the rules that always or never change.

Build it as a Skill. GC AI’s Skill Creator lets you describe the output you want in plain language or create a Skill from work you already completed in a chat.

Test it on completed matters where you know the right answer. Compare the output and revise the step that drifted.

Save and share the workflow once it holds across different facts. Delegate the first pass, then review the result.

Add structure as the workflow matures: contract positions can become a Playbook, and recurring work can become an Automation.Building Playbooks in GC AIis a 75-minute class, andBuilding with Agentic AIis a 60-minute class covering recurring legal workflows.

KT Farley, Chief Privacy Officer and Associate General Counsel atHelix, describes the handoff:

“The ability to create and store reusable prompts and share them across the team has completely changed the work required to review standard work. Junior teammates now run the checklist prompt first and bring me the output as the predicate for my review.”

That is the in-house legal-engineering loop: encode the judgment, let someone else run the repeatable first pass, and keep the lawyer’s review where judgment matters.

Whicheverlegal AI tools for in-house counselyou evaluate, the test is similar. Can you save what you build, hand it to a teammate, test it against known work, and run it again?

Build the Skill that answers the question your team keeps asking you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do You Need a Law Degree to Be a Legal Engineer?
No. The ABA’s Law Technology Today notes that legal engineers do not necessarily hold law degrees. In-house, the mix depends on the work: lawyers, legal ops professionals, legal technology managers, and other specialists can build workflows, while legal advice and professional responsibility remain with the lawyers providing the legal judgment.
Do You Need to Code to Be a Legal Engineer?
No. You can write GC AI Skills, Playbooks, and Automations in plain English, and a lawyer with no engineering background built Instacart’s Contract Compass at a hackathon. Coding becomes more relevant when a workflow needs deeper integrations; API access is available to organizations and enabled by an administrator.
What Does a Forward-Deployed Legal Engineer Do?
A forward-deployed legal engineer works for a legal AI vendor and embeds with a customer’s legal team: loading the customer’s documents, building prompts and workflows for the customer’s use cases, testing the outputs, and running training. The in-house equivalent is the lawyer on your own team who builds the same workflows and keeps them current after the vendor’s onboarding ends.
Is Legal Engineering a Real Career Path?
Yes. Legal AI vendors and law firms hire for the role directly, and inside legal departments counsel and legal ops build the same systems under their existing titles. For an in-house lawyer the path can start inside the current job: build one workflow the team runs, then the next.
