Why In-House Teams Need Purpose-Built Legal AI

Millions of lawyers use ChatGPT for brainstorming, first drafts, and quick research. The difference shows up when your work product has to hold up.

What is GC AI?

Legal AI built exclusively for in-house counsel

GC AI connects your company's contracts, policies, and data sources with the intelligence of modern LLMs, so every answer aligns with how your business and legal team actually operate.

ChatGPT: General-purpose AI across all industries. Strong on non-legal tasks; not built around in-house workflows.

Why does specialization matter?

Your standards, applied the same way every time

Playbooks encode your contract positions and risk tolerance, so five lawyers reviewing the same NDA produce the same redlines. New hires match senior attorney standards from day one.

ChatGPT: Starts from zero every session. No memory of your standard positions or risk thresholds.

What can GC AI do that ChatGPT can't?

Verified citations from your own documents

Exact Quote delivers character-level citations from uploaded documents. Click the citation, see the source, verify in seconds, every claim traces back to where it came from.

ChatGPT: Cites web sources through browse. No character-level verification against your uploaded documents.

We Built Citation Verification Into Every Response

GC AI's Exact Quote delivers character-level citations from uploaded documents. Every reference points to a specific passage in a specific document. Click the citation, see the source, verify in seconds. Your work product holds up because every claim traces back to where it came from.

ChatGPT can cite web sources through its browse feature, but it does not verify citations against your uploaded documents at the character level. Drop a 60-page MSA into ChatGPT and ask for a summary, and there is no built-in mechanism to confirm the language it returns appears in the document.

We Built Playbooks So Your Whole Team Reviews Contracts the Same Way

GC AI Playbooks encode your company's contract review standards into automated workflows. Upload an NDA, and the Playbook runs it against your positions, flags deviations, and suggests specific language. Five lawyers reviewing the same contract through the same Playbook get the same redlines.

ChatGPT starts from zero every time, with no memory of your standard positions or risk thresholds. Paste the same vendor NDA into five sessions and you get five different sets of redlines. We built Playbooks so your institutional knowledge lives in the system instead of in people's heads.

We Built Zero Data Retention as the Default

GC AI is SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 certified, GDPR compliant, with zero data retention agreements with OpenAI and Anthropic, and AES-256 encryption. Your data is encrypted at rest and in transit, and your security team can verify all of this directly at trust.gc.ai.

ChatGPT consumer plans (Free, Go, Plus, Pro) use your conversations for model training by default. True Zero Data Retention is available only on OpenAI's API platform for qualifying organizations, not as a standard ChatGPT Enterprise feature. In-house counsel handling M&A, employment disputes, or regulatory matters should never have to negotiate for privacy.

We Teach You How To Use Legal AI Before Asking You To Buy Anything

More than 6,000 legal professionals have taken GC AI's CLE-certified (California) courses on legal AI prompting and applying AI in real legal work, taught by former general counsels. The 101 class has run 15+ live sessions with 100+ attendees each.

ChatGPT provides a text box and documentation aimed at developers. Education should come before the sales pitch: if you understand how to use legal AI well, you see why purpose-built matters.

The GC AI Word plugin has transformed my legal workflow, allowing me to draft and review documents in a fraction of the time it used to take. What used to be hours of tedious contract review now takes minutes, with the AI instantly flagging potential issues and suggesting precise language improvements that align with our company standards and preferences. The seamless integration with Word means I can leverage powerful legal AI without disrupting my existing workflow, making it an indispensable tool for our legal team.

GC AI's Word Add-in is in a class of its own compared to other legal AI tools I have evaluated. Its ability to produce a first-pass redline of an agreement against our own templates has significantly reduced the time required to review non-standard contracts. Furthermore, GC AI's capacity to suggest market-standard compromises and provide clear, concise explanations for edits accelerates negotiations and fosters a more collaborative process between parties.

GC AI for Word has become an integral part of my workflow. Its integration into the online portal ensures seamless communication between the two platforms and helps ensure we're communicating with all stakeholders accurately and efficiently. Most importantly, I appreciate that GC AI continues to listen to their users and improves the software continuously.

Today's victory: my board chair asked me a long time ago for an index of all board resolutions. I can only use the word “collaborate” to describe how I first worked out with GC AI how we were going to do this. I was also mindful of the possibility that GC AI might not be able to remember all of the content since I had about 50 PDF docs to summarize and put into a table. We first worked out what the table would look like, then I uploaded each one and it produced the output in table format for that one doc. And asked me for the next doc. After I uploaded about 10 docs one by one, I asked it to consolidate all the entries into a single table and put it in reverse chron order. It did. I praised it and then fed the rest of the docs one by one. At the end, it produced a consolidated table without any problem. And it asked me if I wanted it to do any more analysis on the data. I'm honestly stunned at how well this worked out. And I also feel like maybe GC AI is turning the tables by giving me positive reinforcement for the approach. That's fine. I welcome the robot army if they will do tasks like this.

As a fractional general counsel for two fast growing technology companies, GC AI for Word has transformed how I handle legal document review and drafting. The integration is seamless, the AI suggestions are remarkably accurate for legal context, and it saves me hours each week. The beta testing experience showed a team that truly listens to user feedback. This tool understands legal nuance in ways other AI tools simply don't. Highly recommended for any legal professional working in Word.

The GC AI for Word plugin has gone from a curiosity to an essential component of my workflow for contract reviews. The product team has been very responsive as we've identified new issues and proactive about adding new capabilities. It doesn't replace the need to think critically about every redline, but it cuts down dramatically on the time you need to spend on the easy stuff so you can focus on the issues that truly need your attention.

GC AI for Word is an invaluable multi-purpose legal assistant. It streamlines document management by identifying missing or duplicated clauses while also handling complex document review with precision. The tool excels at flagging potential regulatory issues and enforcement risks, then provides targeted language to mitigate these concerns. As a legal professional, I rely on this tool daily for efficient document drafting and comprehensive review processes.

Common questions

What LLM Providers Does GC AI Use?
GC AI uses OpenAI, Anthropic, Cohere, Reducto, and Google LLM APIs. GC AI maintains zero data retention agreements with OpenAI and Anthropic.
Is ChatGPT Safe For Lawyers?
ChatGPT consumer plans (Free, Go, Plus, Pro) use conversations for model training by default. Users can opt out in settings, but the default is opt-in. True Zero Data Retention is available only on OpenAI's API platform for qualifying organizations, not as a standard ChatGPT Enterprise feature. GC AI is SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 certified, GDPR compliant, with zero data retention agreements with OpenAI and Anthropic, and AES-256 encryption.
Can ChatGPT Review Contracts?
ChatGPT can read contract text and identify general issues, but it has no playbook enforcement, no consistent review standards, and no memory of your company's positions. Five lawyers reviewing the same NDA get five different outputs. GC AI Playbooks automate review against your company's standards for consistent results.
How Much Does ChatGPT Cost Vs GC AI?
ChatGPT offers Free and Go for casual users, Plus at $20/month and Pro at $200/month for individuals, Business at $25/seat/month annual ($30 monthly, formerly Team), and Enterprise (contact sales, not published). None of these tiers include legal-specific features like character-level citation, contract Playbooks, in-house legal training, or a system prompt calibrated for legal work. GC AI costs $500/month and includes Playbooks, Exact Quote, Easy Prompt, GC AI for Word, and CLE-certified (California) education through GC AI Classes.
Does ChatGPT Enterprise Work For Legal Teams?
ChatGPT Enterprise adds SOC 2 Type 2 compliance, ISO 27001/27017/27018/27701 certifications, SAML SSO, SCIM, Enterprise Key Management, custom data retention controls, role-based access, and data residency in ten regions. It does not train on customer data by default. True Zero Data Retention is available only on OpenAI's API platform, not standard ChatGPT Enterprise. It does not add legal citation verification, contract playbooks, Word integration for redlining, legal-specific training, or a system prompt calibrated for legal work. For in-house legal departments that need legal AI, GC AI was purpose-built for that use case.
