GC AI vs Claude Cowork: Legal AI Platform vs AI Agent
Claude Cowork is a powerful engine. GC AI is the car built for in-house counsel.
Where high-performing legal teams learn AI
Why In-House Teams Need Purpose-Built Legal AI
Claude Cowork is impressive technology. But for counsel handling privileged information under deadline, the gap between a general-purpose agent and a production-grade legal platform matters.
What is GC AI?
A legal AI platform, not a general-purpose agent
GC AI ships Easy Prompt, Playbooks, Research, Files, Exact Quote, and GC AI for Word as natives, production-grade for two years across 2100+ legal teams.
Claude Cowork: A general knowledge-work agent. Legal features arrive through an open-source plugin that needs manual markdown configuration.
Why does specialization matter?
Compliance ships on day one, not as a setup task
Full enterprise audit logging, SOC 2 Type II, SOC 3, GDPR, zero data retention with OpenAI and Anthropic, and AES-256, all verifiable by your security team.
Claude Cowork: Excluded from Anthropic's Audit Logs, Compliance API, and Data Exports. Anthropic advises against regulated workloads.
What can GC AI do that Claude Cowork can't?
Verify every citation against your own documents
Exact Quote checks that each cited passage matches its source at the character level. Click the citation, see the source, verify in seconds.
Claude Cowork: Cites web sources through browse. No character-level verification against your uploaded documents.
Compare GC AI vs Claude
Both platforms use advanced AI models. The difference is what ships around the model, and whether your compliance team can verify it.

GC AI Ships Compliance as a Default
This is the difference that matters most for regulated legal teams, and the one worth understanding fully.
Claude Cowork activity is not captured in Anthropic's Audit Logs, Compliance API, or Data Exports. Your compliance team cannot monitor, review, or export Cowork interactions through Anthropic's standard enterprise infrastructure. Conversation history lives on the user's local machine, outside enterprise retention policies and governance frameworks.
For in-house counsel, privileged communications, M&A due diligence, and regulatory investigations all need audit trails. Your compliance team needs visibility. Your outside counsel needs confidence that AI-assisted work product meets discovery and privilege standards.
GC AI is SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 certified, GDPR compliant, with zero data retention agreements with OpenAI and Anthropic, and AES-256 encryption.
We built it this way because our founder has been the GC who fields those compliance questions. The answer should be simple, and your security team can verify all of it directly.

Your Citations Come From the Document, Not the Model's Memory
GC AI's Exact Quote feature verifies that every cited passage matches its source material at the character level. Click the citation, see the source, verify in seconds. Proprietary citation verification technology built specifically for legal documents.
Claude Cowork can cite web sources through Claude's browse capabilities, but it does not verify citations against your uploaded documents at the character level. Drop a 60-page MSA into Cowork and ask for a summary, and there is no built-in mechanism to confirm the language it returns appears in the document.
For in-house counsel reviewing contracts, drafting briefs, or preparing board materials, verified citations save review cycles and build confidence in the work product.

Legal AI Should Work Out of the Box
GC AI ships with legal-specific features ready to use on day one. Playbooks automate the contract reviews you run every week. Easy Prompt turns plain language into advanced legal prompts. GC AI for Word handles redlining, issue spotting, and drafting inside Microsoft Word.
Claude Cowork's Legal Plugin ships useful commands -- /review-contract, /triage-nda, /vendor-check, /brief, /respond -- but each command requires manual playbook configuration in markdown files. Teams build and maintain their own playbook files to reflect their jurisdictions, standard positions, and risk tolerances.

We Invest in Legal AI Education
GC AI has taught 6,000+ lawyers through CLE-certified (California) courses on legal AI prompting and applying AI in real legal work, led by former general counsels. The 101 class has run 15+ live sessions with 100+ attendees each. Built for in-house counsel who need to be productive today.
Anthropic offers a free Introduction to Claude Cowork course through Anthropic Academy that covers general usage of its desktop agent, but it is not specific to legal work.
We teach you how to use legal AI before asking you to buy anything.

What in-house teams say about GC AI

The GC AI Word plugin has transformed my legal workflow, allowing me to draft and review documents in a fraction of the time it used to take. What used to be hours of tedious contract review now takes minutes, with the AI instantly flagging potential issues and suggesting precise language improvements that align with our company standards and preferences. The seamless integration with Word means I can leverage powerful legal AI without disrupting my existing workflow, making it an indispensable tool for our legal team.
Katelyn CanningDirector and Head of Legal Company
GC AI's Word Add-in is in a class of its own compared to other legal AI tools I have evaluated. Its ability to produce a first-pass redline of an agreement against our own templates has significantly reduced the time required to review non-standard contracts. Furthermore, GC AI's capacity to suggest market-standard compromises and provide clear, concise explanations for edits accelerates negotiations and fosters a more collaborative process between parties.

GC AI for Word has become an integral part of my workflow. Its integration into the online portal ensures seamless communication between the two platforms and helps ensure we're communicating with all stakeholders accurately and efficiently. Most importantly, I appreciate that GC AI continues to listen to their users and improves the software continuously.
Sarah BrownleeContract SpecialistToday's victory: my board chair asked me a long time ago for an index of all board resolutions. I can only use the word “collaborate” to describe how I first worked out with GC AI how we were going to do this. I was also mindful of the possibility that GC AI might not be able to remember all of the content since I had about 50 PDF docs to summarize and put into a table. We first worked out what the table would look like, then I uploaded each one and it produced the output in table format for that one doc. And asked me for the next doc. After I uploaded about 10 docs one by one, I asked it to consolidate all the entries into a single table and put it in reverse chron order. It did. I praised it and then fed the rest of the docs one by one. At the end, it produced a consolidated table without any problem. And it asked me if I wanted it to do any more analysis on the data. I'm honestly stunned at how well this worked out. And I also feel like maybe GC AI is turning the tables by giving me positive reinforcement for the approach. That's fine. I welcome the robot army if they will do tasks like this.
In my experience over the last year, this is the best Legal AI product on the market for in-house lawyers, hands-down. Great work Cecilia Ziniti!
David MorrisGeneral Counsel at Snyk
As a fractional general counsel for two fast growing technology companies, GC AI for Word has transformed how I handle legal document review and drafting. The integration is seamless, the AI suggestions are remarkably accurate for legal context, and it saves me hours each week. The beta testing experience showed a team that truly listens to user feedback. This tool understands legal nuance in ways other AI tools simply don't. Highly recommended for any legal professional working in Word.
Mike BittnerGeneral CounselThe GC AI for Word plugin has gone from a curiosity to an essential component of my workflow for contract reviews. The product team has been very responsive as we've identified new issues and proactive about adding new capabilities. It doesn't replace the need to think critically about every redline, but it cuts down dramatically on the time you need to spend on the easy stuff so you can focus on the issues that truly need your attention.
Jacob TewesFractional Legal Counsel

It streamlines document management by identifying missing or duplicated clauses while also handling complex document review with precision. The tool excels at flagging potential regulatory issues and enforcement risks, then provides targeted language to mitigate these concerns.
