Why In-House Teams Need Purpose-Built Legal AI

Gavel and Gavel Exec were first built for solo practitioners, small firms, and small-law transactional teams. GC AI was built by a General Counsel, for General Counsels.

What is GC AI?

Legal AI built exclusively for in-house counsel

Playbooks automate the contract reviews you run weekly, Exact Quote cites documents at the character level, and Research pulls real-time primary law with citations.

Gavel: Built for solo practitioners, small firms, and small-law transactional teams, now expanding into in-house.

Why does specialization matter?

Your outputs go to the CEO

In-house work ends up in front of executives, finance teams, and boards. GC AI writes for the people you share your work with, and most of them are not lawyers.

Gavel: Defaults to small-firm transactional drafting and intake-form document automation, which needs translation for a business audience.

What can GC AI do that Gavel can't?

Citations you can verify, research you can cite

Exact Quote verifies every cited passage against the source document at the character level, and Research pulls real-time primary law with citations.

Gavel: Document automation and contract review. No character-level citation verification or primary-law research.

Compare GC AI vs Gavel

Here is how the two platforms compare across the features that matter for in-house legal work. Gavel Exec is the AI contract review product, and Gavel Workflows is the document automation platform.

GC AI for Word redlining a contract inside Microsoft Word

Easy Prompt, the Skill Library, and a Word Add-In Built for Your Workflow

Easy Prompt rewrites your plain language into the kind of structured prompt that gets the best answer from the model. Type "check this NDA for red flags" and Easy Prompt converts it into a lawyer-grade prompt with the right context, role, and constraints before it reaches the model. No prompt engineering required, and the non-lawyers on your team can use it too.

The In-House Skill Library ships with pre-built workflows for MSAs, DPAs, privacy matters, board resolutions, and employment agreements. Custom skills train on your company's prior work, so the second time your team redlines an NDA, GC AI starts from your last position. Multi-document review handles entire contract packages in a single pass.

The Word Add-In is available on Microsoft AppSource and brings the full platform inside Word: redlining, issue spotting, drafting, comment summarization, plus Chat2 for web research from inside the document. What you start in the web workspace pulls into Word with one click.

Gavel Exec runs inside Microsoft Word and, since April 2026, also as a web platform, with a precedent-based redline engine that catches deviation from your playbooks and pairs with market benchmarking. That combination is a real strength for transactional attorneys reviewing third-party paper.

GC AI's depth comes from a different layer of the legal AI stack: the prompt-rewriting input layer (Easy Prompt), the 20,000-line in-house system prompt, the Skill Library, Projects for matter memory, and character-level citation through Exact Quote on each output.

Multi-document review handles entire contract packages in a single pass. GC AI's Word add-in enforces playbooks inline, inside the document, without switching interfaces. Since April 2026, Gavel Exec has also added a web platform, so contract review has moved beyond Word for both platforms.

A GC AI answer written for a business stakeholder

Your Outputs Go to the CEO

Drop the response into Slack. Paste it into a board deck. Send it to your CMO. GC AI writes for the business audience reading your work, including VPs, executives, and the board.

Gavel Exec produces redlines and fallback positions a transactional attorney expects when reviewing third-party paper. Each GC AI response runs through a 20,000-line legal system prompt we built to sound like a colleague briefing you on the answer. If your audience is a senior partner reviewing a redline, Gavel Exec's depth on transactional drafting works. If your work goes to the CEO on Thursday, GC AI was built for that.

Citations You Can Verify

When you send guidance to a business team, each statement needs to be traceable. You are the final reviewer. No associate checks your work before it reaches the VP of Sales or the CEO.

GC AI's Exact Quote provides character-level citation. Each AI output links to the exact text in the source document. Click the citation, see the source, verify in seconds.

Customers reported 21% greater perceived accuracy than generalist AI on the same legal tasks. That margin matters when your name is on the memo.

Gavel Exec produces redlines with fallback positions traceable to its precedent corpus and your playbooks. GC AI cites at the character level, pointing you to the exact words inside the document.

GC AI Playbooks configured with a company's standard contract positions

Your Playbooks Reflect Your Company's Positions

GC AI's Playbooks run as agents trained on your company's standards. Pre-built Playbooks ship for NDAs, DPAs, SaaS MSAs, and commercial purchase MSAs. Custom Playbooks train on your prior agreements, and Custom Company Profile encodes your team's voice, templates, and standards at the company level. Your defaults reflect your company's positions on each NDA, DPA, and MSA your team reviews.

Gavel Exec's Playbooks pair with market benchmarking, which is a real strength for transactional attorneys negotiating third-party paper.

For an in-house GC writing for your own CEO, your company's playbook is the right default.

Your Data Is Private and Encrypted

GC AI maintains zero data retention agreements with OpenAI and Anthropic, meaning your prompts and documents are never stored by model providers or used for training. GC AI is also SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 certified, GDPR compliant, and AES-256 encrypted. Gavel Exec holds SOC II compliance, HIPAA, GDPR, CCPA, AES-256 encryption, and a publicly disclosed zero data retention agreement with OpenAI.

This is the number one question in classes and in sales conversations. The answer is straightforward, and your security team can verify all of it directly at trust.gc.ai.

The GC AI Word plugin has transformed my legal workflow, allowing me to draft and review documents in a fraction of the time it used to take. What used to be hours of tedious contract review now takes minutes, with the AI instantly flagging potential issues and suggesting precise language improvements that align with our company standards and preferences. The seamless integration with Word means I can leverage powerful legal AI without disrupting my existing workflow, making it an indispensable tool for our legal team.

GC AI's Word Add-in is in a class of its own compared to other legal AI tools I have evaluated. Its ability to produce a first-pass redline of an agreement against our own templates has significantly reduced the time required to review non-standard contracts. Furthermore, GC AI's capacity to suggest market-standard compromises and provide clear, concise explanations for edits accelerates negotiations and fosters a more collaborative process between parties.

GC AI for Word has become an integral part of my workflow. Its integration into the online portal ensures seamless communication between the two platforms and helps ensure we're communicating with all stakeholders accurately and efficiently. Most importantly, I appreciate that GC AI continues to listen to their users and improves the software continuously.

Today's victory: my board chair asked me a long time ago for an index of all board resolutions. I can only use the word “collaborate” to describe how I first worked out with GC AI how we were going to do this. I was also mindful of the possibility that GC AI might not be able to remember all of the content since I had about 50 PDF docs to summarize and put into a table. We first worked out what the table would look like, then I uploaded each one and it produced the output in table format for that one doc. And asked me for the next doc. After I uploaded about 10 docs one by one, I asked it to consolidate all the entries into a single table and put it in reverse chron order. It did. I praised it and then fed the rest of the docs one by one. At the end, it produced a consolidated table without any problem. And it asked me if I wanted it to do any more analysis on the data. I'm honestly stunned at how well this worked out. And I also feel like maybe GC AI is turning the tables by giving me positive reinforcement for the approach. That's fine. I welcome the robot army if they will do tasks like this.

As a fractional general counsel for two fast growing technology companies, GC AI for Word has transformed how I handle legal document review and drafting. The integration is seamless, the AI suggestions are remarkably accurate for legal context, and it saves me hours each week. The beta testing experience showed a team that truly listens to user feedback. This tool understands legal nuance in ways other AI tools simply don't. Highly recommended for any legal professional working in Word.

The GC AI for Word plugin has gone from a curiosity to an essential component of my workflow for contract reviews. The product team has been very responsive as we've identified new issues and proactive about adding new capabilities. It doesn't replace the need to think critically about every redline, but it cuts down dramatically on the time you need to spend on the easy stuff so you can focus on the issues that truly need your attention.

It streamlines document management by identifying missing or duplicated clauses while also handling complex document review with precision. The tool excels at flagging potential regulatory issues and enforcement risks, then provides targeted language to mitigate these concerns. As a legal professional, I rely on this tool daily for efficient document drafting and comprehensive review processes.
