GC AI vs Ironclad: A CLM, or the In-House Legal AI Layer?

Ironclad runs your contract pipeline. GC AI runs the analysis, the research, and the answer you send the CEO.

These are two different layers of the legal stack

Ironclad is an enterprise contract lifecycle management platform: intake, routing, e-signature, repository, renewals, with AI woven through. GC AI is the analytical layer the in-house lawyer works in every day. Many teams run both.

What is GC AI?

The legal AI platform for the in-house lawyer

Contract review and redlining, research with primary-law citations, regulatory monitoring, employment, privacy, drafting, and board prep. A 20,000-line legal system prompt tuned for the in-house user.

Ironclad: An AI CLM. Its Jurist agents handle drafting, review, research, and redlining inside the contract lifecycle it operates.

What are you actually buying?

A system of record, or an analytical desk

A CLM governs how the whole company routes and signs paper. GC AI governs nothing. It answers the question in front of you and hands back work you can send.

Ironclad: Workflow Designer, e-signature, repository, renewals, and obligation tracking make it the contract system of record.

How fast can you start?

Value before month one, not after implementation

$500 per seat per month, 14-day free trial, no credit card. In GC AI's December 2025 study of 100+ customers, 97.5% of teams saw value inside the first month.

Ironclad: Demo-only pricing with custom enterprise quotes, annual contracts, and implementation services. Budget for both licensing and rollout.

Compare GC AI vs Ironclad

Both platforms ship AI for contracts and both integrate with Microsoft Word. The difference is category: Ironclad operates the contract lifecycle, GC AI does the legal analysis that lands on the lawyer's desk.

The CLM never has to grow a brain

If your company already runs Ironclad, the two fit together cleanly rather than competing. Ironclad owns the lifecycle and the system of record: intake, approval routing, e-signature, the repository, and renewals.

GC AI owns the analytical layer. A contract routed in Ironclad drops into Microsoft Word, GC AI runs your Playbook, marks the redlines as tracked changes, and pulls character-level citations. The marked-up version goes back into Ironclad for signature and storage.

The CLM never has to grow a brain, and the legal work never has to wait on one.

GC AI Playbooks workspace listing official and custom contract playbooks

Playbooks encode your positions without an implementation project

Playbooks ship pre-built for NDAs, DPAs, SaaS MSAs, and commercial purchase MSAs, and your team extends them with your own positions. Upload your standard NDA, define where you hold the line, and GC AI reviews every incoming agreement against it.

At the 2026 GC AI Summit, Taylor Robertson ran GC AI's SaaS MSA Playbook against a live $1M Atlassian agreement. In one click it flagged standard deviations and a unilateral modification clause outside the playbook's rules.

There is no workflow to design first and no company-wide process to change. You start with the contract on your screen today.

GC AI Research returning primary law with citations

Most of the in-house week is not a contract

A CLM is measured on contract throughput. The in-house lawyer is measured on everything: the employment question from HR, the state privacy law that shifted last month, the regulatory read the board asked for, the answer the CFO needs before Thursday.

GC AI Research runs multi-agent searches across authoritative legal databases and government sources and returns current case law, statutes, and regulations with citations. The Skill Library ships ready-to-use workflows for NDAs, DPAs, regulatory summaries, and board consents.

Before signing any contract-lifecycle platform, ask what covers the analytical work that never touches the pipeline.

GC AI Exact Quote showing character-level citation linked to the source document

Every answer is traceable to the exact words

When guidance leaves the legal department, it has to be defensible. You are the final reviewer, and no associate checks your work before it reaches the CEO.

Exact Quote gives you character-level citation. Every output links to the precise language in the source document, beyond a page number or a paragraph summary. Click the citation, see the source, verify in seconds.

Customers reported a 21% accuracy advantage over generalist AI.

The GC AI Skill Library of ready-to-use in-house workflows

A failed CLM is a badge of honor nobody wants twice

Jenna Hunt, Head of Legal Operations at Tipalti, put it plainly on the CZ and Friends podcast: "I feel like it's a badge of honor in the legal ops community saying you had a failed CLM. I think everyone has at least one under their belt."

A CLM becomes the right investment when contract volume genuinely justifies operating the lifecycle as software, with the headcount and timeline to match. When the bottleneck a lawyer feels every day is the analysis rather than the routing, the analytical layer is the faster win.

GC AI takes 14 days to evaluate, not two quarters. 97.5% of teams reported value before the end of month one.

We teach the lawyers doing the work right now

Buying a platform is the easy part. Getting a department to use it consistently is where the value compounds.

GC AI Classes are free and CLE-certified (California), taught by former general counsels, covering prompt engineering for legal work, AI-assisted contract review, and building internal AI adoption playbooks. More than 6,000 legal professionals have completed them.

That is training for the lawyer, not enablement for the workflow administrator.

The GC AI Word plugin has transformed my legal workflow, allowing me to draft and review documents in a fraction of the time it used to take. What used to be hours of tedious contract review now takes minutes, with the AI instantly flagging potential issues and suggesting precise language improvements that align with our company standards and preferences. The seamless integration with Word means I can leverage powerful legal AI without disrupting my existing workflow, making it an indispensable tool for our legal team.

GC AI's Word Add-in is in a class of its own compared to other legal AI tools I have evaluated. Its ability to produce a first-pass redline of an agreement against our own templates has significantly reduced the time required to review non-standard contracts. Furthermore, GC AI's capacity to suggest market-standard compromises and provide clear, concise explanations for edits accelerates negotiations and fosters a more collaborative process between parties.

GC AI for Word has become an integral part of my workflow. Its integration into the online portal ensures seamless communication between the two platforms and helps ensure we're communicating with all stakeholders accurately and efficiently. Most importantly, I appreciate that GC AI continues to listen to their users and improves the software continuously.

Today's victory: my board chair asked me a long time ago for an index of all board resolutions. I can only use the word “collaborate” to describe how I first worked out with GC AI how we were going to do this. I was also mindful of the possibility that GC AI might not be able to remember all of the content since I had about 50 PDF docs to summarize and put into a table. We first worked out what the table would look like, then I uploaded each one and it produced the output in table format for that one doc. And asked me for the next doc. After I uploaded about 10 docs one by one, I asked it to consolidate all the entries into a single table and put it in reverse chron order. It did. I praised it and then fed the rest of the docs one by one. At the end, it produced a consolidated table without any problem. And it asked me if I wanted it to do any more analysis on the data. I'm honestly stunned at how well this worked out. And I also feel like maybe GC AI is turning the tables by giving me positive reinforcement for the approach. That's fine. I welcome the robot army if they will do tasks like this.

As a fractional general counsel for two fast growing technology companies, GC AI for Word has transformed how I handle legal document review and drafting. The integration is seamless, the AI suggestions are remarkably accurate for legal context, and it saves me hours each week. The beta testing experience showed a team that truly listens to user feedback. This tool understands legal nuance in ways other AI tools simply don't. Highly recommended for any legal professional working in Word.

The GC AI for Word plugin has gone from a curiosity to an essential component of my workflow for contract reviews. The product team has been very responsive as we've identified new issues and proactive about adding new capabilities. It doesn't replace the need to think critically about every redline, but it cuts down dramatically on the time you need to spend on the easy stuff so you can focus on the issues that truly need your attention.

GC AI for Word is an invaluable multi-purpose legal assistant. It streamlines document management by identifying missing or duplicated clauses while also handling complex document review with precision. The tool excels at flagging potential regulatory issues and enforcement risks, then provides targeted language to mitigate these concerns. As a legal professional, I rely on this tool daily for efficient document drafting and comprehensive review processes.

Common questions

Is Ironclad A Competitor To GC AI?
Not directly. Ironclad is an enterprise contract lifecycle management platform that governs intake, routing, e-signature, the repository, and renewals. GC AI is the legal AI layer the in-house lawyer works in: contract review and redlining, research with primary-law citations, regulatory work, employment, privacy, and board prep. Plenty of enterprises run both, with Ironclad owning the pipeline and GC AI owning the analysis.
What AI Features Does Ironclad Include?
Ironclad ships its AI under the Jurist brand, with agents for drafting, review, research, editing, and contract management, plus AI-powered intake, automated redlining, and conversational search across the repository. A native Word add-in is included. The scope is organized around the contract lifecycle rather than the broader in-house workload.
Does Ironclad Publish Its Pricing?
No. Ironclad does not publish per-seat or per-tier pricing as of July 2026. Buyers go through an enterprise sales process and receive a custom quote, typically with annual contracts and implementation services. GC AI publishes $500 per seat per month with no seat minimum, a 14-day free trial, and no credit card required.
Can GC AI Work Alongside Ironclad?
Yes, and that is the common enterprise pattern. A contract routed in Ironclad drops into Microsoft Word, where GC AI runs your Playbook, marks redlines as tracked changes, and returns character-level citations through Exact Quote. The marked-up version goes back into Ironclad for signature and storage. Ironclad keeps the system of record; GC AI does the legal analysis.
Do I Need A CLM Or A Legal AI Platform?
Name the bottleneck first. If the pain is routing, approvals, signature, storage, and renewal exposure across a high volume of paper, that is a CLM problem and Ironclad is built for it. If the pain is the analysis, the redline, the research question, and the memo that has to go to the CEO, that is a legal AI problem. Standing up a full CLM reorders how a whole company routes and signs paper, which is a heavy first move when the daily bottleneck is analytical.
How Do GC AI And Ironclad Compare On Security?
Ironclad holds SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001/27017/27018, HIPAA capabilities, and GDPR compliance via Standard Contractual Clauses. GC AI is SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 certified, GDPR compliant, AES-256 encrypted, and maintains zero data retention agreements with OpenAI and Anthropic, so prompts and documents are never stored by model providers or used for training. Every GC AI claim can be verified at trust.gc.ai.
