GC AI vs LegalOn: AI Contract Review for In-House Counsel
LegalOn powers AI contract review for all lawyers. GC AI powers it for yours.
Where high-performing legal teams learn AI
Why In-House Teams Need Purpose-Built Legal AI
Reviewing contracts is one tab. The rest of in-house counsel work is the other ten, and GC AI was built for all of them.
What is GC AI?
AI contract review, plus the rest of the in-house workload
Contract review, legal research, drafting, M&A diligence, regulatory tracking, and stakeholder communication on one platform, with persistent matter memory through Projects.
LegalOn: Contract review, contract management, and an AI assistant for ad hoc questions about contracts.
Why does specialization matter?
Outputs built for the people who read them
Answers land where the work actually goes, instead of staying inside a contract redline that needs translation before it reaches a non-lawyer.
LegalOn: AI contract review spanning law firms and in-house teams, so outputs stay inside the redline.
What can GC AI do that LegalOn can't?
Character-level citations and primary-law research
Exact Quote verifies every cited passage against your uploaded documents at the character level, and Research answers the question that doesn't start in a contract.
LegalOn: Source-language references without character-level verification, and no primary-law research.
GC AI vs LegalOn: AI Contract Review Side-by-Side
Both platforms ship AI contract review inside Microsoft Word. The difference is what each platform was built around, and how that shapes the rest of the in-house workload.

Playbooks: Agentic AI Contract Review for In-House Teams
Different lawyers on the same in-house team produce different redlines on the same NDA based on different judgment calls about indemnification caps, different fallback positions on data handling, and different limits-of-liability ceilings. The institutional knowledge lives scattered across the team rather than encoded in the platform.
Playbooks is the answer. Upload your standard NDA, define your positions, and your Playbook reviews every incoming NDA against those positions. Five lawyers running the same Playbook produce the same redlines. Your judgment, encoded once, applied across every contract your team touches.
Since GC AI's inception, the Playbooks have reflected the way an in-house lawyer reviews contracts. GC AI ships pre-built Playbooks for NDAs, DPAs, MSAs for SaaS, and MSAs for commercial purchases, plus the ability to build your own from your team's positions in under an hour. LegalOn ships 50+ attorney-built playbooks for common contracts, plus Custom Playbooks for team-specific standards. Those are pre-written checklists you adapt.
GC AI Playbooks are agentic and multi-step. They run end-to-end against incoming paper, surface deviations and judgment calls outside the defined rules, and pair with Research, Exact Quote, and matter memory through Projects so a contract review carries forward into the next deal.

Exact Quote: Character-Level Citations for AI Contract Review
Your CFO asks where the indemnification cap in the vendor MSA actually came from. You scroll back to the contract, screenshot the section, and paste it into Slack. The auditor reading the chain a week later does the same thing.
Exact Quote answers it without the screenshot step. Every citation pulled from your file matches your document down to the character. Click the citation, see the exact passage in the source, paste it into the deck.
LegalOn delivers attorney-authored guidance with clickable references to source language. That works inside a playbook-driven review surface. Exact Quote pulls the language verbatim from your document down to the character, which is the level of precision a CFO conversation tends to require.

A Word Add-In That Carries the Whole Platform
The contract is in Word. The redline goes back in Word. So we put the whole platform inside Word.
GC AI for Word is the Word Add-In, and it includes Chat2 for web research, saved prompts, Easy Prompt, and Projects for matter memory. Pull primary law into a redline without leaving Word. Run a Playbook against an incoming NDA without leaving Word. What you start in the web workspace pulls into Word with one click.
LegalOn's Word Add-In handles playbook-driven analysis and applied revisions inside the document. Anything beyond contract review (research, drafting non-contract memos, stakeholder questions) lives elsewhere: outside counsel, generic AI, or your own bandwidth.

Research for the Question That Doesn't Start in a Contract
The hardest in-house questions don't start in a contract. Your VP of Engineering asks if the new vendor's AUP triggers a notification obligation. Your CMO wants a one-pager on a state privacy law that was amended last week. Your CFO needs to know if a counterparty's parent guarantee is enforceable across two jurisdictions.
Research was built for them. Multi-agent retrieval from primary law and authoritative databases, with citations that link to the source. The agents run simultaneously, biased toward authoritative legal sources and government databases.
LegalOn's AI Assistant covers ad hoc questions about contracts. For research questions that don't start in a contract document, in-house teams running LegalOn route the work to outside counsel, generic AI, or their own bandwidth. GC AI Research is what makes that routing unnecessary.

Outputs Built for the People Who Read Them
GC AI writes for the people you share work with. Your CEO. Your board. Your CMO. Most of them are not lawyers, and they need answers they can act on without a translation step.
Every response runs through a 20,000-line legal system prompt designed for that audience. The output lands ready for the email, the deck, the message back to the VP of Sales.
Hayley McAllister, Senior Counsel at Jasper, on what that does to your bandwidth: "GC AI has enabled me to do the work of four people."
LegalOn's outputs orbit the contract: redlines, playbook commentary, issue lists tied to a clause. GC AI's outputs are calibrated for the audience an in-house lawyer's work actually reaches: a CFO, a board, a head of sales who needs a clear answer they can act on.

Security and Privacy
GC AI is SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 certified, GDPR compliant, with zero data retention agreements with OpenAI and Anthropic, and AES-256 encryption. SOC 3 is the publicly verifiable trust report; your security team can audit GC AI's posture directly at trust.gc.ai without booking a sales call or signing an NDA. The full LLM provider breakdown is in our Security Page.
LegalOn holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, and ISO/IEC 27017:2015 certifications, with GDPR and CCPA compliance, and routes model traffic through Microsoft's Azure OpenAI service. Both platforms clear standard enterprise baselines. The meaningful difference: GC AI's ZDR is direct with the frontier model providers, while LegalOn's data handling inherits Azure OpenAI's terms.

What in-house teams say about GC AI

The GC AI Word plugin has transformed my legal workflow, allowing me to draft and review documents in a fraction of the time it used to take. What used to be hours of tedious contract review now takes minutes, with the AI instantly flagging potential issues and suggesting precise language improvements that align with our company standards and preferences. The seamless integration with Word means I can leverage powerful legal AI without disrupting my existing workflow, making it an indispensable tool for our legal team.
Katelyn CanningDirector and Head of Legal Company
GC AI's Word Add-in is in a class of its own compared to other legal AI tools I have evaluated. Its ability to produce a first-pass redline of an agreement against our own templates has significantly reduced the time required to review non-standard contracts. Furthermore, GC AI's capacity to suggest market-standard compromises and provide clear, concise explanations for edits accelerates negotiations and fosters a more collaborative process between parties.

GC AI for Word has become an integral part of my workflow. Its integration into the online portal ensures seamless communication between the two platforms and helps ensure we're communicating with all stakeholders accurately and efficiently. Most importantly, I appreciate that GC AI continues to listen to their users and improves the software continuously.
Sarah BrownleeContract SpecialistToday's victory: my board chair asked me a long time ago for an index of all board resolutions. I can only use the word “collaborate” to describe how I first worked out with GC AI how we were going to do this. I was also mindful of the possibility that GC AI might not be able to remember all of the content since I had about 50 PDF docs to summarize and put into a table. We first worked out what the table would look like, then I uploaded each one and it produced the output in table format for that one doc. And asked me for the next doc. After I uploaded about 10 docs one by one, I asked it to consolidate all the entries into a single table and put it in reverse chron order. It did. I praised it and then fed the rest of the docs one by one. At the end, it produced a consolidated table without any problem. And it asked me if I wanted it to do any more analysis on the data. I'm honestly stunned at how well this worked out. And I also feel like maybe GC AI is turning the tables by giving me positive reinforcement for the approach. That's fine. I welcome the robot army if they will do tasks like this.
In my experience over the last year, this is the best Legal AI product on the market for in-house lawyers, hands-down. Great work Cecilia Ziniti!
David MorrisGeneral Counsel at Snyk
As a fractional general counsel for two fast growing technology companies, GC AI for Word has transformed how I handle legal document review and drafting. The integration is seamless, the AI suggestions are remarkably accurate for legal context, and it saves me hours each week. The beta testing experience showed a team that truly listens to user feedback. This tool understands legal nuance in ways other AI tools simply don't. Highly recommended for any legal professional working in Word.
Mike BittnerGeneral CounselThe GC AI for Word plugin has gone from a curiosity to an essential component of my workflow for contract reviews. The product team has been very responsive as we've identified new issues and proactive about adding new capabilities. It doesn't replace the need to think critically about every redline, but it cuts down dramatically on the time you need to spend on the easy stuff so you can focus on the issues that truly need your attention.
