Why In-House teams need purpose-built legal AI?

General-purpose legal AI trains on everything. In-house AI trains on how in-house lawyers actually work, and outputs that land with the business, not just the legal team.

What is GC AI?

Legal AI built exclusively for in-house counsel

GC AI is the only legal AI platform designed around how in-house lawyers work. The workflows you repeat weekly, the stakeholders you report to, the speed the business expects from legal.

Spellbook: Legal AI for all lawyers. Strong in law-firm transactional drafting; not built around in-house workflows.

Why does specialization matter?

Your outputs leave the legal department

Most in-house work ends up in front of executives, finance teams, or boards. GC AI answers are written to be pasted into Slack or a board deck, not handed back to another lawyer.

Spellbook: Optimized for legal drafting precision inside contract language. The right fit if your audience is always legal.

What can GC AI do that Spellbook can't?

Real-time legal research with citations

Research searches current case law, statutes, and regulations. Exact Quote provides character-level citations. Spellbook Ask answers questions about uploaded contracts, not primary law.

Spellbook: Provides Q&A on uploaded contracts only. It does not search case law, statutes, or regulatory materials.

The GC AI Word Add-in redlining a contract beside the document in Microsoft Word

GC AI runs your legal workflow entirely in Word

GC AI for Word is the Word Add-in that includes Chat2, saved prompts, Easy Prompt, and Projects. Pull primary law into a redline with Chat2. Run a Playbook against an incoming NDA. Carry matter memory from last week's draft into this week's negotiation. All inside Word.

What you start in the web workspace pulls into Word with one click. If your team lives in Word, you can run end-to-end there. If your team uses both, the two are synced.

Playbooks turn contract standards into workflows

Upload your standard NDA, define your positions, and GC AI automatically reviews every incoming agreement against them. Your Playbook flags the issues that matter, not a generic checklist. Your judgment, encoded once and applied across every contract.

At the 2026 GC AI Summit, Taylor Robertson ran GC AI's SaaS MSA Playbook against a live $1M Atlassian agreement. In one click, it flagged standard deviations and a unilateral modification clause outside the playbook's rules, showing it can catch more than a checklist.

Your team's shared memory stays under your control

Projects provide persistent matter memory, keeping parties, negotiated positions, prior guidance, and deal documents together so you never have to re-brief a matter.

Custom Company Profile tailors GC AI to your templates, writing style, and legal standards.

Both are fully user-controlled. You decide what GC AI remembers and how it's applied. Unlike Spellbook's automatic Preference Learning, which learns from edits across matters, GC AI keeps context intentionally scoped to each matter.

The GC AI security page, trusted by 2100+ legal teams

Your data is private and encrypted

GC AI has zero data retention agreements with OpenAI and Anthropic, so prompts and documents are never stored by model providers or used for training. It's also SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 certified, GDPR compliant, and AES-256 encrypted.

It's the top security question from legal and IT teams, and every claim can be verified at trust.gc.ai.

GC AI only accesses documents you explicitly upload to Files or Projects, giving legal and security teams full control over what stays inside the platform.

Every response is ready to share beyond Legal

Drop the response into Slack. Paste it into a board deck. Send it to your CMO. GC AI writes for the people you share your work with, and most of them are not lawyers.

Spellbook optimizes for legal drafting precision. Every GC AI response runs through a 20,000-line legal system prompt we built to sound like advice from a colleague, not a memo from outside counsel. If your work stays inside the legal department, either platform works. If your work goes to the CEO on Thursday, GC AI was built for that.

What in-house teams say about GC AI

The GC AI Word plugin has transformed my legal workflow, allowing me to draft and review documents in a fraction of the time it used to take. What used to be hours of tedious contract review now takes minutes, with the AI instantly flagging potential issues and suggesting precise language improvements that align with our company standards and preferences. The seamless integration with Word means I can leverage powerful legal AI without disrupting my existing workflow, making it an indispensable tool for our legal team.

GC AI's Word Add-in is in a class of its own compared to other legal AI tools I have evaluated. Its ability to produce a first-pass redline of an agreement against our own templates has significantly reduced the time required to review non-standard contracts. Furthermore, GC AI's capacity to suggest market-standard compromises and provide clear, concise explanations for edits accelerates negotiations and fosters a more collaborative process between parties.

GC AI for Word has become an integral part of my workflow. Its integration into the online portal ensures seamless communication between the two platforms and helps ensure we're communicating with all stakeholders accurately and efficiently. Most importantly, I appreciate that GC AI continues to listen to their users and improves the software continuously.

Today's victory: my board chair asked me a long time ago for an index of all board resolutions. I can only use the word “collaborate” to describe how I first worked out with GC AI how we were going to do this. I was also mindful of the possibility that GC AI might not be able to remember all of the content since I had about 50 PDF docs to summarize and put into a table. We first worked out what the table would look like, then I uploaded each one and it produced the output in table format for that one doc. And asked me for the next doc. After I uploaded about 10 docs one by one, I asked it to consolidate all the entries into a single table and put it in reverse chron order. It did. I praised it and then fed the rest of the docs one by one. At the end, it produced a consolidated table without any problem. And it asked me if I wanted it to do any more analysis on the data. I'm honestly stunned at how well this worked out. And I also feel like maybe GC AI is turning the tables by giving me positive reinforcement for the approach. That's fine. I welcome the robot army if they will do tasks like this.

As a fractional general counsel for two fast growing technology companies, GC AI for Word has transformed how I handle legal document review and drafting. The integration is seamless, the AI suggestions are remarkably accurate for legal context, and it saves me hours each week. The beta testing experience showed a team that truly listens to user feedback. This tool understands legal nuance in ways other AI tools simply don't. Highly recommended for any legal professional working in Word.

The GC AI for Word plugin has gone from a curiosity to an essential component of my workflow for contract reviews. The product team has been very responsive as we've identified new issues and proactive about adding new capabilities. It doesn't replace the need to think critically about every redline, but it cuts down dramatically on the time you need to spend on the easy stuff so you can focus on the issues that truly need your attention.

GC AI for Word is an invaluable multi-purpose legal assistant. It streamlines document management by identifying missing or duplicated clauses while also handling complex document review with precision. The tool excels at flagging potential regulatory issues and enforcement risks, then provides targeted language to mitigate these concerns. As a legal professional, I rely on this tool daily for efficient document drafting and comprehensive review processes.

How Much Does Spellbook Cost Compared To GC AI?
GC AI starts at $500 per month for individual users with a 14-day free trial and published pricing. Spellbook does not publish pricing on its website and requires a sales conversation. Spellbook offers a 7-day free trial.
Is Spellbook Or GC AI Better For Contract Review?
Both platforms offer contract review through Playbooks. Spellbook adds clause benchmarking against industry standards drawn from contracts they have processed, which is valuable during negotiations. GC AI adds Exact Quote (character-level citation from documents) and Research (real-time primary law), which extends contract review into legal research and analysis. The best fit depends on whether your team prioritizes benchmarking data or citation accuracy and legal research.
Can GC AI Do Legal Research?
Yes. GC AI Research provides multi-agent legal intelligence with real-time primary law and citations. This is one of the biggest differences between the platforms. Spellbook's "Ask" feature answers questions about contracts you have uploaded but does not search case law, statutes, or regulations.

Spellbook's contract review lives in Word, with a separate web app (Associate) for multi-document workflows.
