How to prompt legal AI
Five habits that get sharper, more reliable answers from legal AI, without becoming a prompt engineer.
You don't need to be a prompt engineer to get great results from legal AI. A few habits go a long way.
1. Give context, not just a task
Tell the tool who you are, what you're working on, and what good looks like. “Review this NDA from the perspective of the receiving party” beats “review this NDA.”
2. Ask for the reasoning
Request exact quotes and citations. If an answer can't point to a source, treat it as a draft to verify rather than a conclusion to rely on.
3. Work in small steps
Break a big task into pieces, summarize, then flag risks, then propose redlines. Each step is easier to check than one giant prompt.
4. Reuse what works
When you land on an instruction that works, save it. A skill library means you never paste the same instructions twice.
5. Keep a human in the loop
The goal isn't to remove the lawyer, it's to remove the rote work so the lawyer can focus on strategy. Always review before anything goes out the door.
