Fundamentals
What is legal AI?
A plain-English primer on legal AI for in-house teams, what it is, what it isn't, and where it actually helps.
Legal AI is software that uses large language models to help with legal work, drafting, reviewing, summarizing, and researching documents in a fraction of the time it would take by hand. For in-house teams, the promise is simple: less rote work, more time for judgment.
What it does well
- Drafting first passes. Turn a short instruction into a solid starting draft you refine.
- Reviewing and summarizing. Surface the key terms, risks, and obligations in long docs.
- Research. Pull current, cited information from authoritative sources.
What it shouldn't do
Legal AI is a partner, not a replacement for professional judgment. The best tools make their reasoning checkable, showing exact quotes and verifiable citations, so a lawyer can trust, but verify.
What to look for
When you evaluate a legal AI tool, ask three questions: Is it accurate and auditable? Is it secure with your confidential information? And does it fit the way your team already works, including inside the documents and tools you use every day?
